Modern football shirts rarely attempt to compete with iconic vintage designs.
Liverpool’s 2026–27 home shirt does exactly that.
Inspired heavily by the legendary 1989–91 Liverpool F.C. home kit, Adidas have created a release that feels both nostalgic and surprisingly bold. The rich Active Maroon base gives the shirt a darker, more sophisticated tone than Liverpool’s traditional bright red, while the all-over geometric triangular pattern immediately calls back to one of the club’s most recognisable eras.
And that’s where opinions will probably divide.
For some supporters and collectors, referencing such an iconic shirt feels dangerous territory. The original late-80s Adidas designs are deeply woven into football culture and nostalgia, meaning any modern reinterpretation will naturally face comparison. Purists may still prefer the cleaner simplicity of the vintage version.
But viewed on its own merits, this new release is genuinely striking.
The long-sleeved version especially enhances the overall aesthetic. The repeated geometric detailing stretches across the sleeves beautifully, creating a shirt that feels more dynamic and visually layered than many recent modern releases. Combined with the crisp white Adidas stripes, white sponsor detailing and minimalist collar, the design manages to balance retro inspiration with a sharper modern silhouette.
What makes the shirt interesting is that it doesn’t simply recreate the past — it reinterprets it.
Modern football shirts often play things too safe, but this one embraces personality and visual identity in a way that feels refreshingly old-school. Whether it ultimately surpasses the beloved 1989–91 original will remain heavily debated among collectors, but one thing feels certain:
This shirt will not be forgotten anytime soon.
